Workshop Live Review
We have reviewed a lot of online guitar courses over the last year or two and have been impressed with how companies continue to innovate in the online guitar tutorial market. This is probably due to the high level of competition that exists in this area which can only be a good thing for customers. Workshop Live is one such innovator and they have produced a membership site that offers a massive amount of guitar tuition for an affordable monthly fee.
Before we continue with this review its important to point out that this is based on the guitar section of Workshop Live as they also provide keyboard, Bass and Drum tuition. We'll probably review the other sections of the site seperately another time as they are excellent products in their own right.
Free Guitar Lessons
One of the first things you should check out is the FREE lessons that are provided by Workshop Live. They have dozens of full guitar lessons from the online catalog that feature everything from delta slide and acoustic blues to Jimi Hendrix style fills and advanced rock guitar. We spent ages going through these free lessons and were impressed with how professional each lesson was put together. The quality is no surprise as WorkshopLive has been created by the founders of the National Guitar Workshop, DayJams, and National Guitar Workshop Publishing so there is a lot of experience and talent behind the scenes
What do you get for your money?
- 1800 music lessons and songs that you can learn to play
- 50+ professional music teachers
- Acoustic, Rock, Blues, and Jazz lessons at all skill levels.
- Great seminars on music theory, classical guitar, bending, slide etc
- Famous songs from The Eagles, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Duke Ellington etc.
Most lessons contain 5-8 lesson videos with music notation, chord charts and tab. You can play along with the interactive practice player to slow down and loop each segment until you have it perfected. Each lesson provides the same amount of information that a 30 minute private lesson would cover. You can even print out the lesson exercises to practice off line.
The interactive multimedia player is one of the most impressive parts of this website and although it may require a short download (this is very quick if you have broadband) it's well worth it. As each video segment is played the tablature & notation is displayed in a seperate pane below and you have access to a metronome, tuner and chord finder at all times. It's a joy to use and is something that I could see being used, in a similar way, on other courses in the future.
There's no doubt that this is a very successful site, the guitar instructors are first class and although there are no famous names here you can always tell that the instructor has had years of experience. We thoroughly enjoyed the lessons we tried and there are in-depth lessons in virtually every style you could imagine on offer. Delta slide, acoustic blues, tapping and advanced soloing. You name it, you'll find it here!
Conclusion
Now this is a membership site which makes it stand out from many other courses on the market and is priced at $29.95 monthly, $59.95 quarterly or $199.95 yearly (which offers the best value for money). So it's priced at the higher end of the market but to be honest both the amount and quality of the lessons and songs on offer more than justify the price. I can't recomend this site enough and we have happily given it a 10/10 score.
